Brinnon, WA Cove RV Park
Our week-long stay was at Cove RV Park. The friendly staff immediately made us feel welcome. Every Saturday, they host a welcome gathering around the communal firepit. Our hosts provided food and drinks, a great way to meet other campers. I wish all campgrounds had this feature. Mitch and I like to expose ourselves to different experiences. The vineyard outdoor comedy show was unique for us. The weather was chilly, but we soon discovered that Washington’s weather can be fickle.
Our visit to Port Townsend was delightful. I love historical buildings, and the town provided them along with Victorian-style homes. Each year, they host a sailboat race—the Race to Alaska. The winner gets $10,000. I’m not sure if the money is worth the treacherous journey. There are a variety of shops one can wander in and out of to get some unique gifts. We stopped for lunch at the Owl Spirit, which offered gluten-free options and came highly recommended by several of the locals we met.
The RV campground was a great launching point for many of our hikes. We hiked Ludlow Falls, Staircase Rapids, and Shady Lane Trail. We enjoy hikes that lead us to splendid waterfalls. Nothing is like the thunderous sound of the water rapidly cascading across the rocks. Hiking fascinated us as most of the trees are covered with various types of moss, giving the surroundings an eerie feeling. We stopped at the visitor center to see other places of interest, and while we were there, the employee received a message that orca whales were spotted along the coast. With that news, we hopped in our car in search of spotting them. We made several stops, but we never got a chance to see them. We hope to see them along the way since we are at various locations in the Olympic Penisula over the next four weeks.
