Port Angeles, WA Part 2 Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent Lake & Whale Watching Tour
The Hurricane Hill Trail is 1.5 miles one way and is paved, but don’t let it fool you. You must walk another 1.5 miles just to get to the trail since they closed the road to the trailhead. It’s a steep climb to the top. Along walking up the many switchbacks, we encountered deer and marmots. We reached the top and were rewarded with the incredible scenery of snow-capped mountaintops, glistening snow, and views of several mountains surrounding the park. It was awe-inspiring, and we just sat and relished our beautiful surroundings and were grateful for being immersed in the moment. On the hike back, we spotted two black bears in the meadow below and more deer wandering among the trees. We were amazed at the line waiting to enter as we left the park- so glad we were early risers.
Our next stop was Lake Crescent. It was a beautiful lake; however, the morning winds were horrific. Unfortunately, it is not a great time to sit in those welcoming Adirondack chairs and soak up the view of the deep blue water. So we continued to Marymere Falls through the forest filled with moss-covered trees. This 90 ft waterfall has viewpoints of the upper and lower falls.
Determined to see whales before we leave the Olympic Peninsula, we scheduled a whale-watching tour. With no guarantees of seeing whales, we took our chances and hit the jackpot. Within fifteen minutes of being on the water, a mother humpback and a baby were spotted. Later, we were pleasantly surprised by another humpback as it presented its tail fluke. Continuing to troll the waters, we were fortunate enough to enjoy the frolicking of three orcas. This tour was a win and one to cross off our bucket list. We ended our day with a visit to the HarBar winery for cheese and wine as we sat and enjoyed the view.
