Heading to Texas
Finally, I have the okay to travel to Texas while continuing physical therapy there. It’s been seven months since we’ve been on the road. As we begin our 11,060-mile trek to Texas, we will need to familiarize ourselves with our routine by reviewing checklists and ensuring everything is in good order. We are not in a rush and have four overnight stops before reaching our destination. We are grateful for Harvest Hosts, as they usually provide wonderful overnight stays.
ALLISON ACRES – Pinetta. Florida (HARVEST HOST)
This is an organic blueberry farm nestled in acres of beautiful trees, offering a peaceful setting for a restful night’s sleep. One can pick their blueberries, or they have pre-picked ones and jam for sale. They offer 50 amp electricity, which we opted for since the 90′ weather would be uncomfortable without it. Remember my comment about the importance of a good night’s sleep? A rig pulled up next to us and ran its generators the entire night. So much for that, so early the next morning, we headed out to our next destination.
RIVERS EDGE – Holt, Florida
This is a private campground in the panhandle that offers 50 amp (thank goodness). It also features a boat ramp and is big rig friendly. There is ample space between each site, allowing some privacy from your neighbors. This was where a good night’s rest was had. I can’t believe we haven’t left Florida yet.
SOUTHERN MISS – Petal, Mississippi (HARVEST HOST)
The property is beautiful with lush green grass, surrounding trees, and chirping birds. The designated RV spot was graveled and leveled, accommodating our big rig. For a $15 fee, one could hook up to 50 amp and water. Next to the site was an overhead concrete patio with a sitting area overlooking a fire pit. One would think it was your backyard. Our hosts were so gracious and delightful. An invitation was extended to join them at dinner as they were having a cookout. As an added treat, we were offered to take any clipping we wanted from their garden. I left with rosemary and basil. This was a terrific stop, and we hope we revisit them.
LANDRY VINEYARDS – West Monroe, Louisiana (HARVEST HOST)
We visited this winery on our way back to Florida last year and loved every minute of it. The wines are delicious as they have tastings of thirty different wines. At certain times of the year, they have concerts and entertainment on the weekends. They don’t offer any music during the summer due to the heat. Two of their Harvest Host sites offer 50-amp full hookups, along with three cottages. Our site was located near the cottages on a hill overlooking the beautiful acres of grapevines. The next morning, we headed for our destination with six bottles of wine.
We will be in Texas for a while as we visit family and search for our lake home. Postings will not be regular, but we plan to take several excursions while here, so we will post updates when those happen. Wish us luck!
