Permission to Board: Setting Sail down the Blue Danube

We’ve officially arrived in Passau, Germany—and the adventure begins!

Stepping onto our Viking river ship, the first thing that hit us was its scale. Coming from the world of massive ocean liners, river cruising is a whole different world. With just 95 staterooms and around 190 guests onboard, the vibe is instantly intimate, calm, and cozy. No navigating endless decks or fighting crowds here—just smooth sailing ahead.

Before casting off, we spent the day wandering through Passau, a Bavarian gem framed by classic cobblestone streets and vibrant, pastel-hued storefronts. But the true star of the city is St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Standing inside, surrounded by soaring Italian Baroque architecture, you can’t help but freeze in awe. Every ornate vestibule and gilded detail leads your eyes up to a breathtaking, ceiling-spanning masterpiece—it feels almost surreal to witness artistry like this preserved so beautifully across the centuries. Fun fact: St. Stephen’s is also home to one of the largest pipe organs in the entire world! Step outside, look up, and you’re treated to a dramatic view of the Veste Oberhaus fortress perched high on the hilltop above the river.

It’s been a full, incredible first day, but now it’s time to head back onboard, unwind with a glass of local wine, and enjoy dinner as the Danube drifts by.

Tonight, we sleep on the river. Tomorrow? We wake up to the docks of Linz, Austria
