Tunnels, Horses, and Boardwalks: Coastal Magic at Assateague Island

The next stop on our itinerary was one Mitch had been dreaming about for years: Assateague Island National Seashore—a breathtaking stretch of coastal wilderness where wild horses roam free. Getting there, however, tested our nerves just a bit!

To reach the shore, we had to brave the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. With a clearance height of 13’6” and our rig sitting at a tight 13’4”, we were holding our breath and saying a few quick prayers. We figured if massive semi-trucks make the squeeze every day, we’d make it through safely too—and thankfully, we did!

🐎 Welcome to Paradise (Traffic Included!)

You can always judge a campground’s popularity by the queue at the gate. We found ourselves stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for thirty minutes, slowly creeping toward a check-in area with two full lanes. Normally, that kind of wait is a total buzzkill—but Assateague knows how to roll out the red carpet.

Before we even passed the entrance, we were greeted by wild horses casually grazing along the roadside. Any frustration immediately melted away. Our campsite was pure perfection: steps away from the crashing surf, nestled up to a classic sand dune. Beyond the stunning beach sunrises, the real magic was sharing our space with these beautiful horses. We watched them stroll past our campsite, trot along the surf, forage in the salt marshes, and wander the roads without a care in the world.

🌾 The Legend of the Wild Ponies

A trip to the Assateague Visitor Center gave us a fascinating glimpse into the island’s history through a short documentary.

  • How they got here: Pioneers released these horses roughly 300 years ago to avoid the livestock tax. Against all odds, they adapted and thrived in this rugged environment.
  • Fun Fact: If you notice the horses look a bit… plump, they aren’t actually pregnant! Because they primarily eat saltmarsh cordgrass and plants coated in sea salt, they drink twice as much fresh water, and their stomachs tend to distend.

🛍️ Small-Town Charm & Classic Boardwalk Vibes

Looking to explore a bit, we took a short drive over to Berlin, Maryland—a spot that was once dubbed “America’s Coolest Small Town.” We aren’t entirely sure who hands out those monikers, but in this case, Berlin earned it! It featured charming streets and, hands down, the best, most unique toy shop we’ve ever set foot in.

Of course, no trip to the coast is complete without a boardwalk stroll, so we headed over to Ocean City. Packed with classic amusement park rides, the heavenly scent of fried boardwalk treats, and buzzing crowds.

While it was great for racking up our daily step count, the summer heat quickly started to pack a punch. We decided to wrap up our outing and head back to our coastal haven—ready to relax at camp and soak in the sweet sights and sounds of the wild horses.
