Finding Calm on the Canal: A Return to Lums Pond State Park, DE

After a restful overnight stay at a local Moose Lodge, we hit the road toward Delaware to return to one of our favorite quiet escapes: Lums Pond State Park. Centered around the largest freshwater pond in the First State, this was our second time camping here, and it delivered the exact same peaceful charm that drew us in the first time.

Our absolute favorite highlight of staying at Lums Pond is taking on the Castle Trail—a fantastic 10-mile bike ride along the scenic Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. For fellow cyclists, this trail is an absolute dream: completely paved, smooth, and continuous right alongside the water. It was a picture-perfect day to be out on two wheels. We cruised along as boats and jet skis kicked up wakes in the canal, sharing friendly nods with other cyclists soaking in the sunshine.

The trail leads straight into Delaware City, a charming waterfront town packed with historic buildings, cozy local shops, and a passenger ferry that shuttles visitors over to historic Fort Delaware. While we decided to skip the ferry tour this time around, we grabbed a well-earned respite at the riverfront park at the end of the road, watching the water traffic before gearing up for the 10-mile ride back to our campsite.

It might not have been our wildest or adrenaline-fueled trip, but the quiet solitude and serene vibes of Lums Pond were exactly what the doctor ordered.
