Time to Hit the Road: Destination Virginia Beach for a Family Reunion!
We kicked off our first big RV adventure of 2026 with a classic summer road trip, traveling from Texas to the sunny shores of Virginia Beach. It had been over eight months since our last journey in the fifth wheel, so we were definitely ready—and eager—to get back into our rhythm on the road.
Stop 1: Unwinding at Landry Vineyards (Monroe, Louisiana)
We started our trip by unwinding with a relaxing evening at Landry Vineyards in Louisiana—a long-time favorite stop of ours, not only for its beautiful setting, but for its delicious wines!
Since we arrived right in the middle of harvest season, we were greeted by loud, high-pitched squealing noises. While a bit jarring at first, we quickly learned it was just piped-in audio designed to keep the local birds from feasting on the precious grapes! Annoying sound aside, sipping local wine as the sun set was the perfect way to ease into long-distance travel mode.
Stop 2: A Close Call & Still Waters at Forkland Campground (Forkland, Alabama)
The next morning, we set out toward Alabama—and experienced a milestone we’d managed to avoid until now: we ran out of fuel for the first time ever!
Thankfully, the RV gods were smiling on us. We had just pulled into the gas station and were barely 100 yards from the pumps when the engine sputtered out. Anywhere else along the highway, and it would have been a very bad day!
With the tank full again, we made it to a deeply peaceful stay at Forkland Campground, nestled along the Black Warrior River. We were shocked by how quiet the park was; from our site, we couldn’t see a single other camper in the distance. The total stillness of the night was pure bliss.
Stops 3 & 4: Shaded Parks & Rolling Foothills (Georgia)
Pushing further east into Georgia, we tucked into the deep, cooling shade at Little Tallapoosa Park for a quick breather. Daily driving with a rig can get tiring and stressful, so taking time to slow down makes all the difference.
From there, we headed toward the foothills for a restful night at Cherokee Campground, soaking in the changing landscapes as the flatlands slowly gave way to rolling green terrain.
Stop 5: Llama Magic at Circle W Farms (Virginia)
Our final stop before reaching our main destination was a rustic Harvest Host gem: Circle W Farms in Virginia.
Our host, Anita, was an absolute delight and a wealth of knowledge on all things llamas. It’s a wonderful spot for both kids and adults to get a firsthand look at farm life and meet these fascinating, curious animals up close. She even has a cozy little farm shop filled with soft goods crafted directly from llama fiber!
Arriving in Virginia Beach
Each leg of the drive offered its own unique charm—shifting from lush vineyard views and quiet, riverfront campsites to mountain foothills and cozy farm stays.
By the time we finally pulled into Virginia Beach, trading the hum of the highway for salt air, coastal breezes, and ocean views, we had racked up five days of fantastic driving, smooth setups, and unforgettable memories. It was the absolute best way to launch our 2026 travel season and gear up for a full family reunion!
