Budapest, Hungary: The Queen of the Danube Delivers Everything and More

They say saving the best for last is a travel cliché, but in our case, it couldn’t have been truer.

Welcome to Budapest, the capital of Hungary—famously dubbed the “Queen of the Danube.” The moment you see the city spread across both banks of the river, you instantly understand where that regal nickname comes from.

Unfortunately, Mitch woke up feeling under the weather, so he had to sit out our morning bus tour. While I missed having my partner-in-crime along for the ride, taking the bus tour was the absolute best way to cover serious ground in a city this grand.

A Tale of Two Cities: Buda vs. Pest

Budapest actually owes its name to the merging of two distinct towns split right down the middle by the Danube River:

• Buda (The West Bank): Rolling, historic hills dominated by the fairytale turrets of Fisherman’s Bastion and the grand, commanding presence of Buda Castle.
• Pest (The East Bank): The flat, vibrant pulse of the city, anchored by the jaw-dropping, neo-Gothic Hungarian Parliament building—a masterpiece of stone spires and dramatic arches.

It’s easy to see why Budapest easily ranks among the world’s most influential cultural and historic centers. Beyond its architectural marvels, it holds another world title: the “Spa Capital of the World,” boasting over 100 natural thermal springs flowing beneath the surface!

Crossing the Chain Bridge to Local Flavors

While several historic bridges link Buda and Pest across the water, my absolute favorite is the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Guarded by stone lions that loom majestically over every passerby, crossing it on foot feels like stepping right into European history.

Crossing over, I made my way to the famous Great Market Hall. The multi-story indoor marketplace was an incredible sensory feast—filled with colorful vendor stalls, rich regional spices, handmade crafts, and the intoxicating aromas of traditional Hungarian cooking floating through the air.

After browsing the market stalls, I slipped back out to the street side to grab a table at a nearby café. There’s nothing quite like soaking in the architecture and simply people-watching in a European capital.

The Grand Finale: Budapest Illuminated at Night

While our daytime exploration was lovely, the true crown jewel of the trip came after sunset.

Our tour guide led us on an evening excursion, and nothing in our travels prepared us for Budapest illuminated at night. Every bridge, palace, and tower glows in warm golden light, reflecting off the dark currents of the Danube. If you threw a blanket of snow on the ground, it would look like a living winter wonderland.

Best of all? Mitch was feeling so much better by the evening and was able to join me for the entire night tour—which meant we got some incredible video footage of the glowing skyline together.

We finally crawled back onto the boat late that night, knowing we had an unforgiving 4:00 AM bus transfer waiting to take us to the airport. But honestly? Zero complaints. I would willingly trade hours of sleep any day for a memory as breathtaking as Budapest at night.
